How to Choose Cake Board and Cake Drum Thickness for Tiered Cakes

A practical guide to cake board and drum thickness by cake weight and tier count - including when a 12mm heavy duty drum earns its keep.

Every tiered cake starts with a base board, and the board is the one part of the build that carries the full weight of the cake above it. Choose a board that is too thin and the stack flexes on the way to the venue; choose one that is thicker than you need and you are paying for board you never used. This guide explains how board and drum thickness relates to cake weight and tier count, so you can buy boards that hold up without over-spending.

1. Why Board Thickness Decides Whether a Tiered Cake Survives Delivery

In a tiered cake, every tier pushes its weight straight down through the boards beneath it. A standard thin board is fine for a single display cake on a counter, but a multi-tier celebration cake concentrates several kilograms of cake, filling and decorations onto the base board. If that board flexes, the stack shifts, and the shift is where tiered cakes fail during transport. This is exactly the load path that heavy duty boards are built for.
A practical way to think about it: the base drum of a tiered cake is a structural part, not just a serving surface. Bakers use thick base boards under multi-tier builds where a standard-thin board would bend, and they keep thin boards for single-tier work where the load is lower.

2. Standard Boards vs a 12mm Heavy Duty Drum

For display and single-cake use, a regular cake board does the job. For tiered work, a thick round drum is the safer default. Our factory range includes a 12mm heavy duty load bearing cake drum built as a round thick base board for tiered cakes - the format bakeries use for tiered celebration cakes that have to travel.
As a rough rule, the more tiers and the heavier the cake, the thicker the base you want. A 12mm drum is a deliberate heavy duty choice: thicker than everyday boards, chosen when the cake above it is the heaviest and least forgiving part of the order. Reference pricing for the 12mm heavy duty drum on our Alibaba listing is US$0.57-1.93 per piece.
Buyer rule of thumb: match the board to the worst case, not the average case. Transport is where under-spec boards show up first.

3. Size, Shape and Finish: Matching the Board to the Cake

Thickness is only one variable. Size, shape and finish each matter in different retail settings, and the same factory line can supply all of them together, which keeps a bakery's packaging buying in one place.
Shape is the most visible choice: round boards follow round cakes, and rectangular trays suit sheet cakes and counter display. Finish is the one buyers touch: a smooth solid color surface presents the cake cleanly, while printed boards carry the bakery's own logo and colors. Both finishes come from the same paper packaging production line, so a bakery can order plain display boards and branded boards in one shipment.
Size and shape: round drums follow round cakes; rectangular trays suit sheet cakes and display counters. Our catalog includes a 10x14 inch solid color rectangular cake tray built as a large cake display plate - a reusable, food grade base that is waterproof and oil-proof, which keeps cream and ganache contact from marking the board on display shelves.
Finish: solid color boards present cakes cleanly in bakeries and supermarkets, while printed boards carry a bakery's own branding. Both are available as OEM orders - logo, label, color and size can all be customized with design support based on your samples or graphics.

4. What to Send When You Ask for a Quote

To get a useful quotation on boards and drums, tell us three things: the cake sizes and tier counts you build most, the board thickness you currently use (and whether it has ever flexed), and the quantity you order at a time. With that we can recommend a board or drum from the factory range and quote for your volume. Sampling takes about 5 days and average production lead time is 15 days; a one-year product warranty applies to our packaging items.
If you are unsure whether your cakes need a standard board or a heavy duty drum, send us the tier counts and weights you handle. The right board is the one that never gets noticed on delivery day.
